Hokkaido Mountains

Japan has four seasons. In Hakodate in Hokkaido, the seasonal distinctions are observed clearly. In spring, flowers, including cherry blossoms, bloom; in summer, green trees are beautiful; in fall, the leaves turn different colors; in winter, we have snow. Spring (March-May)

By March, most of snow accumulated in the city has melted. In April, pretty flowers begin to bloom on Mt. Hakodate. From late April to mid-May, it is cherry blossom season. Many people go out for cherry-blossom viewing.

Climate and Clothing

Wear long-sleeved clothes and a light jacket. It is cold early in the morning and late at night. A sweater or a fleece coat is necessary.

Night View

After severe cold of winter has gone, it becomes easy to see the night view. But the observatory will still be really cold at night. Wear a warm jacket to go out.

 

Summer (June-August)

Summer in Hakodate is comfortable with low humidity, and that is why people visit here to get relief from the heat. In July and August, there are outdoor festivals with fireworks events and parades of dancing people as well as plays and musical performances.

Climate and Clothing

Wearing short-sleeved clothes in the daytime is OK, but it might be cool sometimes. Take a jacket with you, since the temperature falls in the morning and at night. The temperature falls from the latter half of August. Wear a jacket or a shawl over long-sleeved clothes.

Night View

With temperature having risen, summer is the best season for viewing the night view. However, there might be a wind, being cold at the summit. It is better to take a jacket with you. Mysterious “foggy night view” and isaribi (lamps on squid fishing boats) might be seen.

 

Autumn (September-November)

Best Time to Visit Hokkaido

In autumn, mountains and the sea look beautiful in the clear air. It is the best season for strolling around the streets and viewing night scenes. The leaves of the roadside trees turn red or yellow from mid-October. You can enjoy the vivid autumn colors.

Climate and Clothing

Since it sometimes gets cold quickly in the morning and at night, wear a jacket or a shawl over long-sleeved clothes. In November, wear a hat, gloves and a scarf as well as a warm coat to keep out the cold.

Night View

In autumn, when the weather is stable and the air is clear, the night view shows clearly and beautifully. The city lights get more sparkling. Since the summit becomes as cold as in winter after sunset, you must dress up properly to keep out the cold.

 

Winter (December-February)

Hakodate has some snowy days around November. The city is white with snow in January and February. The months of December through February feature winter festivals. You can see snow falling over the illuminated buildings and roadside trees.
